So most of the time i would love the thought of a holiday. No work, relaxing/catch up day at home. Sounds pretty awesome right? If you love holidays, Nigeria is soo the place for you. I dont know what it is about this country but there are holidays at least every other week. I seriously am not lying either. Since we have been back in Nigeria which has only been just over a month there has been at least 5 weekday holidays. Soo ridiculous!! Nigerians will find ANY excuse in the book to call a national holiday. Our workers get at least 4 paid days off a month for holidays. Im not a big fan of holidays here. Personally i would rather work every single day while we are here and get more time off when we fly home. I don't know who decides all the days off, but whoever it is obviously hates working. Like i said every excuse in the book. Last Saturday and Monday were holidays - i dont even know the reason, between all the muslim, christian, western and nigerian holidays i gave up trying to keep track. Usually we dont even know its a holiday until the actual day. Its not like there marked on a calendar or anything. I didn't know this was actually possible but wednesday after midnight someone decided yesterday was going to be a holiday. It amazes me how everyone in the city found out between the hours of midnight and 8am because no one came to work. We soon found out it was "mourning day" because the president of the country had died. Now that actually sounds like maybe a legit reason to have a day off but what you don't know is the president of the country has not been seen or heard from since november. He was very sick before he disappeared so everyone thinks he has been dead for months and the government has just been trying to keep it a secret. Probably so they can steal as much money as they can from the country before they get kicked out......who really knows though.
Anyways....so that's 3 holidays in the last week. Now a week or two ago was another extra long weekend (thursday -monday) for Easter/The Lagos Carnival. A first time huge event the city was having. There was a fashion show, parade, fire works ect. We tried going to check it out during the day but turn back because the road to get back to our house was going to be completely blocked off the rest of the day so we couldn't get back. So we had a lazy day at the house. I was down in the pool when all the sudden i heard all this music. I went up to our balcony to see what was going on in the street and watched this go by.......
A full fledged parade. And for nigerian standards a very very impressive one at that. A lot bigger then the hillspring July 1st parade thats forsure. I sat on our balcony for almost an hour watching all the crazy costumes, music, dancing and people having a good old time. It was quite entertaining.
Nigerians just LOVE their holidays.....
