After an amazing trip, we are back and already missing South Africa soo much! We absolutely loved everything about Cape Town! There is no doubt why is it known for its beauty. I still can't get over how pretty the place was. The mountains running along the ocean, the view from table mountain, the waterfront....everything was absolutely gorgeous! We definitely did not feel like we were in Africa one bit, well the Africa we know at least. On top of that, the food was to DIE for!! I think we spend at least half of our time eating! I have never been a big seafood fan, but holy cow i truly could not get enough of it there. Everything was soo fresh and sooo good! I apologize in advance for the pic overload, but they're mostly for my family anyway....
We spent the first 2 nights in Hermanus, this cute little fishing village about 90 mins outside Cape Town. It's known for the best on-shore whale watching because of its high cliffs that drop off right into the ocean. We were fortunate enough to show up on the weekend of their whale festival which was a bonus. They had a little carnival, tons of street ventures, and concerts during the night. This was Jeff's favorite part,
The whale crier. He would blow his horn whenever he spotted a whale and call the other whales to come. He did very excellent job too because we really didn't go 5 minutes without seeing another whale. They were everywhere!! Deep down i think Jeff was really jealous of this guys job.....
Hermanus also has some of the nicest beaches in South Africa...unfortunately it was a little too cold the day we were there to spend on the beach, but they really were beautiful beaches....minus the freezing cold water that is. We were almost on the most southern tip of Africa though, so it shares the ocean with Antarctica. I did have flash backs to the Hillspring triathlon and swimming the dam when i first touched the water.....
After our nights in Hermanus, we drove along the coast back towards cape town. We almost had some near death experience since the driving is on the opposite side of the road and vehicle. Thank goodness i didn't drive or we definitely would have died. Jeff did get the hang of it after a few days! The drive was beautiful though! We made a few stops along the way, Boulders Bay which is a beach full of penguins, Cape Point, although we didn't get to the very end because we missed the gate by 15 minutes, but the drive down there was still fun.
We were surprised at how many warning signs there were for crossing baboons. We thought it would be cool to see one....until we did, and were freaked out by how mean they looked....unfortunately it was only the beginning of having to worry about these furry little devils.....
We made it to our hotel just after sunset....we still could not believe we were still in Africa...
The next day we decided to take a cable car ride up to the top of Table mountain. Words can not describe how amazing the view was from the top. These pics of course do not do it justice....
We spotted a beach that looked super nice from the top and since it was a perfect beach day we decided to hit up the beach.
We soaked in the sun for a while then decided we would be brave and try to get in that freezing cold water again. I really thought being a canadain girl and all I could definitely handle it...but i'm embarrassed to admit...i am a wimp because i could only go up to my waist before chickening out. I did get in much farther than jeff though....although his biggest fear is cold water so that doesn't mean much......
...........much better then jeff.....HAHAHAHA!! We decided sitting in the sun was much nicer.......
That night we went to the waterfront and walked around the harbor, then had the most delicious seafood dinner either of us have ever had while we watched the sun go down over the harbor....
We had planned on going scuba diving while in Cape town but didn't end up having time....by that i really mean we both chickened out because of the cold water so we purposely made sure we didn't have time. So inside we went to the aquarium with about 100 kindergarten kids....we maybe or may not have been the only adults there....
Jeff's favorite thing to do....read every single "get to know us" board....
Like i said, our cheap excuse for wimping out of scuba diving....it still was fun though even if we were the only adults there. After this we headed to the airport back to Johannesburg (which will be coming next). Anyways we seriously loved everyone minute of this place and would definitely go back in a heart beat!!
