Our First Apartment

Wow, I can't believe that I've only been back in Africa for only 2 weeks. It seriously feels like i never left. I promise it has been nothing but pure craziness since ive been back. We really have been all over the place. I flew into Accra which by the way for the 1st time in my life i had ZERO problems with my flight. Nothing was delayed, i made all my connections without full fledge sprinting between gates, i had empty seats beside me so i could lay down and sleep, ALL my luggage was waiting for me when i arrived and nothing was stolen from it!! Nothing short of a miracle i tell ya, it really doesn't get much better that that!! Im sure its because we switched airlines this time. I vow to NEVER go back to Delta flights again!! Unless of course they're the cheapest...then we probably will...but still i LOVED everything about United!!

Anyways we spent a couple days in Ghana, then headed to Lagos for 2 nights, then last week we boarded again for Douala, Cameroon and here we are. Hopefully we will be staying put for a couple weeks at least. I really don't mind Cameroon one bit. Its not as scorching hot as Accra, its a fairly clean city, its safe enough i can walk around during the day by myself, for some reason their mangos and avocados are out of this word amazing, its a french country so there's always fresh baguettes and french bread available at every street corner for dirt cheap which me and jeff have fully been taking advantage of, and the best of all for the 1st time since we have been married we have our very own little apartment!! You may have already heard me say its ridiculously hard to find a place in africa thats not a hotel room for short periods of time which is what we need since we are always back and forth between countries (of course with exception to our time in nigeria where we have been very blessed to have some good friends that have taken us in from time to time). So we were extremely happy to come across this fully equipped, very clean and decently priced little beaut that is month to month....

Ok so an apartment may be a bit of an exaggeration. Its super tiny, like maybe 20ft by 20ft, BUT after living out of a suit case for the last 2 years I have never been SOO excited to finally put my clothes in an actual closet! It may be small but it really has everything we would need inside. A washer/dryer, a/c, decent internet, a normal shower and hot water which is very much a luxury! It also has a little kitchenette with a puncey sink and gas stove top. Unfortunately it only turns on full blast or nothing at all. I feel like I might as well be cooking over an open bonfire some nights...but it gets the job done.

Oh and also what the heck did the creator of this beautiful wall hanging have in mind while carving this?? Please tell me im not the only one that finds it creepy.....

I dont know which is more disturbing...that whatever that thing is is stepping on a very small person or that someone actual bought it and hung it on the wall......Anyways, minus that and also the few giant cockroaches that make an unwelcoming appearance every once in a while and cause me to through my covers off and jump out of bed at night because i am constantly imagining that i feel one crawling on me......we have actually been loving every moment of this little place!! Now if we can only learn french so we can actually speak to someone other than each other. I promise i have lost count of how many times i have made an absolute fool of myself by listening to a 5 min conversation, nodding and smiling like i actually understand what someone's saying...only for them to pause, waiting for an answer and then me finally admit i don't actually speak french...its embarrassing believe me. We are on the hunt for a french tutor though and have made a goal to really study and learn french this next month or two, so hopefully that will change!! Anyways we shall see how the next couple of months go....

I am soo happy for your first apartment! It looks great. Clean tile, washer dryer, internet, stove top, hot water. The bars on the windows look like they have a european influence and most importantly safe. Is that an air conditioning unit in the wall? Life is good. What comes to mind when I look at your piece of art work is a good old game of scum around the barfuss table. Nic at the head of the table saying "I am the King and you are the peaon"
Love, Mom
